چکیده

The complexity of the modern engineering systems besides the need for realistic considerations when modeling their availability and reliability render analytic methods very difficult to be used. Simulation methods, such as the Monte Carlo technique, which allow modeling the behavior of complex systems under realistic time-dependent operational conditions, are suitable tools to approach this problem. The scope of this paper is, in the first place, to show the opportunity for using Monte Carlo simulation as an approach to carry out complex systems’ availability/reliability assessment. In the second place, the paper proposes a general approach to complex systems availability/reliability assessment, which integrates the use of continuous time Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, this approach is exemplified and somehow validated by presenting the resolution of a case study consisting of an availability assessment for two alternative configurations of a cogeneration plant. In the case study, a certain random and discrete event will be generated in a computer model in order to create a realistic lifetime scenario of the plant, and results of the simulation of the plant’s life cycle will be produced. After that, there is an estimation of the main performance measures by treating results as a series of real experiments and by using statistical inference to reach reasonable confidence intervals. The benefits of the different plant configurations are compared and discussed using the model, according to their fulfillment of the initial availability requirements for the plant. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Presenting a New Algorithm for Determining Optimal Replaceable Capacity of Conventional Power Plants by Renewable Power Plants Based on Monte Carlo Method

Given the substitution process of generators using renewable energy sources instead of conventional generators in modern power systems, this paper proposes a Monte Carlo based method to determine an optimal level of this change. At first, LOLE index of the system was calculated without wind power to obtain the reference index. Then, the wind turbine units are replaced with the conventional gene...

Loss of Load Expectation Assessment in Deregulated Power Systems Using Monte Carlo Simulation and Intelligent Systems

Deregulation policy has caused some changes in the concepts of power systems reliability assessment and enhancement. In this paper, generation reliability is considered, and a method for its assessment using intelligent systems is proposed. Also, because of power market and generators’ forced outages stochastic behavior, Monte Carlo Simulation is used for reliability evaluation. Generation r...

A New Methodology for Frequency Estimation of Second or Higher Level Domino Accidents in Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Using Monte Carlo Simulation

Some of the most destructive accidents of 1980s and 90s which occurred in process industries were domino accidents. Although domino accidents are among the most destructive industrial accidents, there are not much pioneering works done on quantification of them. The analytical formulation of the domino accidents is usually complex and need a deep knowledge of probability rules. Even if the ...

Stochastic Assessment of Voltage Sags in Distribution Networks

This paper compares fault position and Monte Carlo methods as the most common methods in stochastic assessment of voltage sags. To compare their abilities, symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults with different probability distribution of fault positions along the lines are applied in a test system. The voltage sag magnitude in different nodes of test system is calculated. The problem with the...

Monte Carlo Simulation to Compare Markovian and Neural Network Models for Reliability Assessment in Multiple AGV Manufacturing System

We compare two approaches for a Markovian model in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) using Monte Carlo simulation. The model which is a development of Fazlollahtabar and Saidi-Mehrabad (2013), considers two features of automated flexible manufacturing systems equipped with automated guided vehicle (AGV) namely, the reliability of machines and the reliability of AGVs in a multiple AGV jobsho...
